Know Before You Dig (KBYD) Training provides foundational awareness for anyone involved in ground disturbance on or near buried infrastructure. This course introduces how underground risk exists, how it is identified, and how both public and private locate systems function across North America.
 
Participants learn the critical differences between public and private locates, why damages occur even when locates are requested, and how decisions made before work begins directly influence safety, delays, and liability exposure.
 
The training focuses on practical understanding rather than regulation memorization, helping participants recognize gaps, limitations, and risk indicators commonly encountered in real world projects. Emphasis is placed on communication, documentation awareness, and knowing when additional investigation or professional support is required.
 
This course applies across both Canada and the United States, with regional examples referenced where applicable.
 
This course serves as the prerequisite foundation for all advanced Know Before You Dig training programs, including Asset Owner, Insurance and Legal, and Private Locator focused courses.
