Know Before You Dig (KBYD) Training provides foundational awareness for anyone involved in ground disturbance on or near buried infrastructure in Ontario. This course introduces how underground risk exists, how it is identified, and how public and private locate systems operate within the Ontario regulatory environment.
 
Participants learn the critical differences between public and private locates, why damages continue to occur even when locates are requested, and how decisions made before work begins directly influence safety outcomes, project delays, and liability exposure. The course addresses common misconceptions around locate requests, clearances, and reliance on markings alone.
 
The training focuses on practical understanding rather than regulation memorization, helping participants recognize gaps, limitations, and risk indicators commonly encountered on real world projects across Ontario. Emphasis is placed on communication, documentation awareness, and knowing when additional investigation or qualified professional support is appropriate.
 
This course serves as the prerequisite foundation for all advanced Know Before You Dig training programs, including Asset Owner and Property Manager training, Insurance and Legal stakeholder training, and Private Locator focused courses.
